North American XB-70 Valkyrie, Pressure sensitive paint model, ca. 1960.

Lent by Ames Research Center

This beryllium -copper alloy model was originally tested in the 1960s to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of this new supersonic long-range bomber. This model has seen a new life in the 1990s for use in the development of pressure sensitive paint (PSP). PSP was designed to change color in relation to the pressure the paint is exposed to. This variation in colors allows the researcher to see and understand the flow on the surface of the model. The black dots on the model are image reference markers used to align images for image processing.
