Dr. Steve Young
Equivalent Visual Flight Deck Technologies

As Principal Investigator for the IIFD project since 2005, Dr. Young leads a team of NASA, industry, and academic researchers and scientists who are working collaboratively in order to achieve its goal of overcoming flight deck-related safety barriers that would otherwise constrain future aerospace operations – such as those envisioned for the Next Generation Air Transportation System.

Since 1993, Dr. Young has been a researcher at NASA in the field of avionics systems engineering as applied to low visibility flight operations. His investigations have ranged from analytical studies to large-scale flight simulation and flight test experiments. Of particular note are his advancement of the idea of a monitoring capability that allows for the real-time validation of the geo-spatial models used by Synthetic Vision Systems, and his work developing a runway incursion detection and alerting capability that provides direct warnings to pilots when these hazardous events become eminent during airport operations.

Dr. Young has a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the West Virginia Institute of Technology, an M.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Georgia Tech, and a Ph.D in Electrical Engineering, specializing in Avionics Systems Engineering, from Ohio University. He is an Associate Fellow of the AIAA and has authored more than 35 technical publications across a range of disciplines including systems engineering, navigation systems, remote sensing, safety-critical avionics, and flight operations.
