AERO MEDIA RELEASES: HYPERSONIC SCIENCE CENTERS AWARD ABSTRACTS
Teledyne Scientific & Imaging LLC

We propose to establish a National Center for hypersonic materials and structures, consisting of a core of seven major universities led by Teledyne Scientific Company, with formal links to industry and government.

The National Center will create a closely monitored network of researchers and students working in cross-disciplinary collaboration and emphasizing educational outreach.

We will revolutionize the design of hypersonic vehicles by creating a new class of hybrid, hierarchical materials that achieve substantial breakthroughs in oxidation resistance, maximum useable temperature, and maximum supportable heat flux.

Our research will develop basic science needed to guide materials design, and engineering science needed to enable designers to use the new materials with efficiency and confidence.

New basic science will span:
  • novel routes for combining different materials in tailored morphologies,
  • new experimental methods that will enable the direct visualization of the mechanisms that control a material's performance; and
  • multi-scale probabilistic model formulations that can simulate mechanisms at all length scales with high fidelity.
New engineering science will include:
  • novel methods of net-shape processing; and
  • the combination of experiments and multi-scale models into a virtual test system that will transform the way in which materials are designed and qualified.
