Texas A&M University
It is proposed to establish a National Hypersonics Research Center
dedicated to theoretical, computational, and experimental studies of
laminar-turbulent transition.
The objectives are to:
- extend and enhance the theoretical framework to include relevant hypersonic physics and identify dominant instability modes in all regions;
- perform fundamental stability experiments that will provide comprehensive validation for the theoretical framework; and
- establish and demonstrate strategies for transition control.
The work will explore instability-mode competition, receptivity, and the
influence of thermo-chemical non-equilibrium, surface chemistry,
ablation and surface roughness. These problems are inter-related and a
systemic approach to prediction and control will integrate them during
the lifetime of the center.
The team consists of highly regarded leaders in the transition
community. Theoretical and computational work will be done at Texas A&M
(TAMU), University of Arizona, and UCLA. Experiments will be conducted
in the NASA-Langley Mach 6 Quiet Tunnel located at Texas A&M University,
the Mach 3.5 Quiet Tunnel at NASA Langley, the Texas A&M University
Hypersonic Shock Tunnel, and the California Institute of Technology T5
Shock Tunnel.
The research team will foster close interactions with AFRL and NASA
personnel and programs. Another important objective will be the
professional development of the students involved in Center activities.
