TPS and Hot Structures for Hypersonic Vehicles - Recent Advances and Technical Challenges
March 20, 2007 / 11 a.m. ET

Presented By: Dr. David Glass

Hypersonic vehicles differ significantly from rocket-based vehicles in their architecture and mission. These differences result in vastly different thermal protection system (TPS) and hot structure requirements; i.e., the use of sharp leading edge, hot structures, and integrated thermal protection systems. The high temperature gradients and structural loads are one of the "Achilles heel" of hypersonic vehicles. This presentation will discuss some of the recent advances in TPS and hot structures for hypersonic vehicles and the technical challenges that need to be overcome.
