Day in the Life of air traffic over the United States
This animation provides an eye-opening illustration of the ebb and flow
of air traffic over the continental United States in one 24-hour period.
When viewing the animation, the number of aircraft flying into and out
of the continental United States is displayed at the top center of the
graphic.
Elapsed time is displayed in the upper right-hand corner of the
animation and shown as "UTC Time" (Coordinated Universal Time, formerly
Greenwich Mean Time).
When the animation begins, it is actually 7 pm Eastern Standard Time (4
pm Pacific Standard Time) and traffic is heavy. At the 12-hour mark of
the animation, it is 7 am EST (4 am PST) and traffic is light. See table
below of time conversions from UTC to U.S. Standard Time.
Watch for dramatically visible increases in traffic coming from hubs
in Chicago, then New York, Washington (DC) Atlanta, Dallas, and the West
Coast .
