In January 2004, the President of the United States outlined his vision
for U.S. Space Exploration, to which NASA responded with a framework
titled "The Vision for Space Exploration" (VSE). Along with NASA's other
directorates, ARMD has developed ways to contribute to this vision.
Aeronautics research and space exploration have always been linked.
Advances in our understanding of aerodynamics, aerothermodynamics,
flight dynamics and control, materials, structures, and human interface
technologies helped make spaceflight possible.
Today, ARMD works to advance our knowledge critical to the entry,
descent, and landing of vehicles on other planets. We’re also developing
the fundamental methods, concepts, tools, and technologies that are
required to achieve hypersonic flight through Earth’s atmosphere and
through the atmospheres of other planets.
